Mysore” classes are named for the city in India where modern Ashtanga yoga began.  It is the original and traditional method of teaching this style of yoga.

In Mysore classes, students move through the series of poses at their own pace.  (See What is Ashtanga?)  A teacher is present to guide newer students through the series and offer personalized adjustments and advice.

Mysore combines the advantages of a regular class and a private lesson.  Compared with group classes led by a teacher, the pace of the practice is set by the pace of your own breathing, with most poses held for five breaths on each side.  This encourages a more focused and integrated experience of yoga, as you connect more deeply with the rhythm of your breathing as it ebbs and flows through each asana.   At the same time, Mysore shares the physical vigor of a led class, the guidance of a teacher, and the support of the community of your fellow students.
